88' Ranger Problems
I have an 88 Ranger XLT 2.9l with 150000 miles. I have been experiencing an intermittent problem that I believe is electrical.
The truck normally starts with no problem and runs good, but after a period of time it cuts off. It may run for 5 minutes or 30 minutes before it stalls. Once it does though, it will not run again for quite a while, maybe days. It may start, but it cuts off immediately. I also notice a spike in the tach right before it dies.
I got the codes and the only fault was a 18.
I have had it at the local ford dealer for the past two weeks. Guess what? It’s not cutting out on their road tests.
Previous to taking it to the dealer I have replaced the distributor twice and the module once. I had the module checked this last time and it checked out OK (but is the check accurate?). Incidentally, I have replaced the MAP sensor and the TPI. I also replaced the fuel filter. I can hear the fuel pump run when I attempt to start it.
Thanks for any help you can give me!
It's the tach pickup on the distributor. I also went through two ignition modules in the process of fixing this, so be prepared.
