I got to thinking about something today. I've heard yall (you all) talking about the primary and secondary jets in the carbs. The carb I have sat for a while and was given to me. I went through it and did a $45 cleanup/rebuild. Now that I think about it, I really can't tell when the 4-barrel is being a 4-barrel. It's the first one I've ever owned so I have nothing to compare it to. Maybe the secondaries are kicking in, maybe not, I don't know. Help.

If the secondaries are tuned/working properly you should not be able to "feel" them "kicking in". If you feel them, then you have either too fast or too slow of a secondary opening point. ie. you are feeling the rush of fuel when they finally open enough or a bog and then accelerate from too much fuel too fast.
There should not be a definite feeling of the secondaries opening, only a smooth acceleration of the engine from idle to max RPM.BTW, you cannot get the secondaries on a vacuum or air valve type 4bl to open by "winging" the throttle, the engine must be under load.

If the secondaries are mechanical, have an assistant sit behind the wheel and apply the pedal as you look at the range of throttle motion (best with motor off). If they are indeed vacuum secondaries, same applies only standing to the side with the motor running...
