Question ring and pinion

Hello! I wanted to ask. I have a Ford F-150 1978. and I installed an AOD transmission. When I bought it, it had a 351M with a C-6 so Now it has this AOD with a 302 but it seams a little slow on take of and the problem is that I dont Know what gear ratio is in it, other than it is the original. and since I installed a 4 bbl,Edelbrock carb. and this AOD tranny Im thinking of installing a 3:73 ring and pinion on it, could any one give me there opinion? or has any one done something similar to this?,thanks!! Victor.

It probably came with a 2.75:1 rear or possibly a 3.00:1 ratio.

This is more of a drivetrain question than Truck question.

Have you checked in the drivetrain forum yet ?

Which ratio you want depends on what size tires you're running. Larger tires need lower ratios (numerically higher). The 302 engine likes to rev too, so a lower ratio would be nice in that truck. I have a 302 in my Bronco with a 3speed manual and 3.50 gears with 31" tires and in my opinion it is geared too high (numerically low). I would prefer 3.73's in it. Since you have overdrive, you can go even lower on the ratio and still be fine on the highway.

Your axle should be a Ford 9", probably a big bearing/big housing model with 31-spline shafts, although 28-spline is still a possibility. Check out www.precisiongear.com or www.ring-pinion.com for more info on gearing and axle parts.
