My 92' Ranger is leaking transmission fluid at an alarming rate. I have to add fluid every 15 to 30 miles I drive. Where should I start to check for leaks or faulty equipment (i.e. master cyl. or slave cyl.)?
BTW its a 2wd, 2.3 liter, with a manual tranny. 65,000 miles
Normally the slave cylinder is the weakest link in the clutch system. Given the symptoms you describe, look under the bell housing to see thin dirty pink fluid dripping from the joint between the engine and transmission and flowing back across the bell housing.
Ok, I've got my ranger up on ramps and see the pink fluid running all down the transmission. I've done everything i need to do to pull the transmission. I'll drop it tommorrow and see what i've got.
I've noted that you mentioned tranny fluid leaking in your post and brake (clutch) fluid in the thread title. With that in mind and since you noted it's pink in color, I'll assume the tranny is leaking. I'd thoroughly wash the tranny with gunk + high pressure water then go for a very short drive. I'd then look for the source of the leak (tranny fluid). Areas of interest would be the front and rear seals, speedo drive gear seal, and the top plate.
I'm confused by your mention of the master/slave cylinder. ATF (pink in color) goes in the tranny and brake fluid (no color) goes in the hydraulics for the clutch. Are we dumping ATF into the hydraulics (clutch)?

+1 to the confussed list. As Cowboy mentioned.... it would be a BAD thing to be adding ATF to the clutch lines. Where are you adding this fluid, and are you checking the trans fluid level on the side of the housing where it has a plug marked "FILL"?
