I swapped out my defective transfer case for a salvage yard piece and have to change the speedometer gears out to correct my speedometer. Today I was going to work doing 80+ mph at 1900 rpm LOL! yeah, I wish!
My truck is a 1991 with the E40d automatic and 3.55-1 gears 4 wheel drive 7.3
What gears do I need to fix the speedometer?
I know I need both the shaft and the cable gears.
thats kinda weired, what year truck is the t-casefrom? what rpms were you running when you were really going 70 or about 70? doesn't seen that changing the t-case would mess with the speedo. seems like all t-cases were 1-1 in high take the gear out of your old t-case and put it in there and see what that does. if its not too hard, or maybe the speedo gear is made to the shaft. i dunno
The best thing is to take the gear out of your original transfer case, count the teeth and go to Ford. Color doesn`t matter, tooth count does! They are about $10-$20 bucks. There are different gears for the slip yoke and fixed yoke transfer cases. For the slip yoke, there will be a clip on the tranny side of the gear that you will need to pop off, then slide the gear forward to let a steel ball fall out, then the gear can be slid off of the shaft if you have the slip yoke type which you should with the automatic tranny. You will need to unbolt the transfer case tailhousing to do this. Make sure you put the gear back on facing the right direction. The slot on the inside of the gear faces the rear of the truck so that when the ball is installed, it keeps the gear from walking rearward. The clip keeps it from walking forward. Takes about 15 minutes and is a piece of cake. I would replace both gears (drive and driven). If you just replace one, the other will quickly wear out. Good time to replace your output shaft seal also.
I put in a tcase from a 92 into my 89 and it did not even have a spot for the speedo gear so I had to get a electric job from autometer. Now I have to figure out how to get the thing programmed. Damn technology.
I have had the case apart and know about how to change the gears but I dont have my "core" so I cannot count the old gears.
There has to be a chart or something that tells which gears I need to buy.
Diesel Dan, I bet you could change your output housing and use your old parts to reconnect the spedo again.
Super easy to do.
4 bolts hold on the housing. one clip holds the plastic gear to the shaft. there will be a ball bearing inside the gear that keeps it ligned up. it will fall right out if you spin the shaft by hand so be carefull not to loose it.
slip the speedo gear off the shaft and install on yours using the same ballbearing and clip then slap your old housing back on the new case and BLAM you have a speedo again.
dont forget to slap some rtv silicone to the housing to seal it.
Sounds like the truck the transfer case was out of had 4.10 or 4.33 gears.
You should be able to get the right gears from Ford by telling them it is for a 3.55 gear truck.
My speedo gear is a light green color, can not tell you the number of teeth. I have 3.55's and 33" tires, speedo is right on. BW 1345 transfer case in mine.
