I have a 97 four banger with a 5-speed. It makes a loud whinig noise at any and all speeds. Doesn't matter which gear its in although 4th is noticebly quiter. I checked the fluid which was about a half a quart low but didn't really help. It's gotten to the point where I can't even hear the radio on highway speeds. Any help would be appreciated.
I used to have a 94 Ranger, have a 98 now, but on my 94 I used to get a really high whinning noise too. I thought it was the tranny because it would only whine when I was in gear. Ended up being the rear U-joint. the pin bearings inside the U-joint were all crushed inside of the cap. The whining came from the spinning of the U-joint when I engaged the tranny, in gear, and would get noticibly quieter the higher the gear. guess this was because there isn't as much torque on the rear axle and drive shaft in higher gears at highway speeds.
maybe this will help, just sounded like the same probelm.
