[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Jan-02 AT 10:47 AM (EST)]My 1991 STX 3.0L 5 spd. Supercab 4x2 just turned 200,000 a short while ago. Prior to that I've notice that to start her-up, I've had to really jam the clutch pedal to the floor. I thought that the clutch inter-lock switch was failing but nooooooooo not so ford truck owner. Upon further inspection I found that where the clutch linkage passes throught the firewall there were numerous WIDE SPREAD CRACKS radiating outward. Everytime the clutch pedal was depressed the firewall would move, flexing inward toward the engine compartment. This explains the hard starting mentioned above. So I cut a piece of 1/4" steel and postioned it (inside) to support this weakend area of the firewall. I contacted several dealerships about this and some of them did admit the Ranger and some F-150/F-250, all with manual trans., did have this problem but no year range was specified. So any of you out there with manual trans., you might want to get on bended knee pull the carpet back where the clutch linkage goes through the firewall and check this area out. If ya catch it soon enough the fix is rather simple for anyone handy with basic tools......GOOD LUCK!!!!
