I have a 88 Bronco EFI with a/c. I have removed the a/c and power steering bracket and all the bolts that hold on the water pump. My problem is there is a stud that held on the a/c bracket going through the pump into the block. It will pivot at this bolt but won't come free. What now. Should that stud unscrew. It looks like it is part of the pump. I have pried until I was afraid of breaking it. Which according to some other posts, sounds like a new nightmare. I do all my own maintenance and didn't htink this would be a big deal but this is kickin' my butt. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Also the Haynes manual, Autozone.com, and a site search were no help.. Thanks in advance..
I just changed the water pump on my 89 with a 302 and I don't remember there being a stud like you described. There were some bolts that served multiple purposes, but nothing that was part of the water pump.
I found a few photos of water pumps on a few of the chain part store websites (Advance, AutoZone) and niether of them show a stud like what you're describing.
Does this stud look like it can be backed out?
How many bolts have you removed from the pump? There should be 7. Also, be sure to note where they came from.
Look in my gallery - there's a few photos of what it should look like.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about, I have an 89 F-150 with the same thing. You'r talking about one of those stud bolts that you need a deep socket to take out, right? That bolt should unscrew but i bet its rusted up pretty bad like all the other bolts you took out. Its gonna feel pretty weird when you start to unscrew it too, cause i think the thing is like 5 inches long and it'll give you some spring action and strange noises when it breaks loose.
Well then with your help it's back to the beast. It sure looks like part of the pump, but with all the corrosion I could be wrong. I'll try unbolting it in the morning and let you guys know. Thanks alot for all the help.
Big Ol Truck: If you go to autozone.com,repair info, vehicle repair guides, engine overhaul, water pump, after entering vehicle info ( 1988 ford bronco) on the third picture down it shows a hand holding a wrench. Just to the right of this above where the bottom radiator hose goes, is the stud I'm talking about. Again it look like part of my water pump but may be just because of corrosion. Thanks.
If you can't get a socket deep enough to reach the nut on the stud, you can always run two nuts onto the stud and use the inner nut to back the stud out. Then remove both nuts before reinstalling. My guess is that this stud is water-jacketed and you are fighting years of built up corrosion and crud to get it moving.
I have done odds and ends on vehicles. I have run into removing stud issues before and never come up with an idea better than vise grips. Thanks for the tip. You guys and this forum rock.
Well for an update, the unremoveable stud came out. The double nut idea from greystreak92 worked like a charm. Of course after turning the bolt a couple of times I noticed that under the grim build up there was a nut on the stud. I felt stupid but hey what can I say. Cleaning the pump area first would have saved a lot of trouble. And for future readers, make sure you mark where the bolts came out of, saves a lot more trouble later. Unless like me you are reading this after you have removed all but one bolt. Thanks again for everyone's input. You guys are great.
