I am in the process of getting my engine replaced due to engine bearings that went south. The engine I am putting in has 45k miles on it. I've heard from a fried that used to work at a Ford dealership that my year V10 (2000) has been known to have crappy transmissions. Has anyone had any problems with theirs? I guess my main concern is, after I get this engine replaced, Do I sell my truck to get a new one? Or will it be reliable to keep for 200k+ miles?
Not only the V10, the needle bearing goes out and that tosses the planet gears. Every dealer that I have spoken to has done a ton of them and most are with around 90K miles. I just laid out 2K on mine, one dealer said they did 22 this year another said they did 10 within the last 3 months.
If your are referring to the 4R100 automatic I had a terrilbe time with with the one I had in my 99 Powerstroke. Could not keep transmissions in it. Bad Torque Converters or whatever! I think Ford may have got it right with the new 5 speed automatic. Have not heard too many problems yet.
the 4r100 is garbage and ford knows it, its just the old e4od with a new model #. just spent $1700 on my 2002 with 39K miles - tc, solenoid & pump. now i hear the engine most likely won't make it to 100K? maybe its time for a toyota
I got rid of my Powerstroke while it still had some warranty left. After two transmission problems in less than 30,000 miles in 1999 I could not stand having it go again! So fingers crossed my E450 Motorhome has not had a problem with the tranny with 30,000 miles on it. My biggest fear is keeping the spark plugs in.
They installed a Factory rebuild 04 3 year 36k warranty. According to the dealer who replaced the tranny, they have had this problem before. I also was concerned about the dreaded plug blow out. I checked the torque at 80k. None of the plugs were loose. The dealear wanted $400 to do it. A new torque wrench ($25) and about 2 hours to take care of it myself.
Good for you on the plug torque. Seems like these 4R100 Transmissions are either very good or just plain junk! I have a friend for example with 99 350 SD with Power Stroke, 130,000 miles, orginal tranny and no problems. Go Figure!
I have friends that have high mileage on theres and on problems but then again I got a list of warrenty work done on mine from my dealer this morning (11/30/04) and found that 500miles and a half a month before I purchaced it, it had the trany replaced.
quote from report "Diagnose test drive and confirmed noisy and trans is getting hot at 360 Deg. and has set code 1783. Check oil level and condition is burnt and full. remove pan and found alot of metal R,R trans for tear down and found plane TS have failed and center support and contaminiated system and further damage that is cost effective to replace assy. call in for approval and relplace"
What I get from this and the parts list is that the plant gear and needle bearing failed - this is at 21025miles on 6/28/04 the truck is an 03' V10 F250 Crew.
wondering myself if I purchaced a junker - definatly thinking seriously about the xtned wrnty in a year and half when mine runs out!!!! not very happy at all!!!
That is a sad deal! It can happen with any brand. It sounds like this one was made before or after coffee break. LOL Hope things get better for you. I know what you are going through. I had similar problems with my 99 PS SD. I sold it before the warranty ran out and had no regrets! When they are bad they are bad and become money pits.

I'm scared I'll get hit by a meteor, the spark plug thing while I'm sure is a valid problem, is no more likely than spinning a bearing, bending a valve, or any other possible mechanical failure. Granted, there have been some mod motors with this problem. But in truth, does anyone really know what the percentage is ? I'd bet it's extremely low. Everyone likes to tell horror stories about their best friend's, dad's, uncle's V-10 and how all 12 sparkplugs blew out all at once and two of them pierced dear aunt Edna's kidney and kilt her dead. I have over 100K on my V-10 and it's automatic transmission. I have put an alternator in it, and brakes. I change tranny fluid every 25K and oil every 5K or less depending on usage. It runs like a striped as$ ape, drive yours, enjoy, don't worry, be happy. If it breaks, fix it, worrying about it breaking has NEVER made anything last longer. Life is good, live it, peace, Ken
