I have a 2001 Ranger 3.0L, with about 275,000 miles, I've noticed an intermittent "squeaking/chirping" noise coming from what seems to be the back of the engine at idle, when the rpm's increase, the noise goes away, also when at idle I notice my oil pressure gauge "twitching" kind of in sync with the "squeaking/chirping" Could this be my oil pump going away?
Hmm....possibly. If the oil pressure gage is jumping around like that, and none of the others are, I'd get it the pump checked out. As you're probably aware, the gage just goes to a predetermined spot to give people warm fuzzy feelings about the oil pressure instead of providing a real gage that's going to fluctuate and might cause some people to panic when it fluctuates. So if it is bouncing around any, it is probably because the oil pressure is lower than where it needs to be.
Ford responded to this criticism on the Corral once and explained that the phony gages were a result of people, mostly women, going to their dealer and panicing about the gage fluctuating. At least on most Rangers the problem is easily rectified. Buy an old style sending unit and remove the resistor in the instrument panel.
