Best 5-speed?
The primary candidates I am looking at are :
Subaru Legacy, the earlier non-AWD, circa '95,
Toyota Camry, although I hear manual wagons are rare if not non-existent
and possibly Nissan or Mitsubishi although I know nothing about them.
I am not looking at Hondas because they use interference engines, timing belts break and engine damage results. Plus, their prices seem higher than others.
My main criteria are:
Easy to work on, Subaru seems to score high in that regard with its engine being non-transversely placed as in other FWD cars.
Lots of parts at junk yards
29 mpg or more

Also carsurvey.org is very positive.
Really my main criteria is a quality car that's 5-speed and easy to work on and gets 29mpg.
