Impact Wrenches

I'm looking for a decent 1/2" impact wrench. Right now I got a crappy CH one that I got for free... not good for much. If I can't get it off with a 1/4" stubby ratchet, I'm not gonna get it off with that impact.

Is the IR231H any good? It supposedly does about 480ft#s forward and 570 reverse. It seems pretty cheap at $110 r so compared to some of the others (like the Earthquake at $200) with similar numbers.

Otherwise any of the HF ones that can be recommended? I am a bit hesitant to trust any of the torque numbers they give on theirs.

Smile IR Impact Wrench

I have used the Ingersoll-Rand for 7 years now and am very satisfied with it.

I have the IR 2131QT, and it is real nice. 600 ft-lbs. It hasn't let me down yet, but the 100 ft-lbs of the IR 2135 would be nice!

I don't know IR very well, seem reputable. Chicago Pneumatic is another that is pretty durable, but I spent the money on a Mac back in 1990, and it is still going strong for me.

The Macs look suspiciously identical to the IR's, at least the ones I have seen.

Could well be, wouldn't be the first time the tool companies contracted out.

I also agree how the Mac impacts look identical to IR's. I would definitely go with the IR, they have always made a good air tool.

Husky

I am considering a Husky 1/2 inch H4150 from Home Depot. It is only $129 and it comes with a life time warranty. It has a maximum 600 ft. lbs. of reverse torque and 550 ft. lbs of forward torque. Does anyone have any history with these?

Looking at the 231H the stats Northern Tool gives, they do not jive with those other people give. They list 470# forward and 590# reverse. Other places list max of 450 or 425 on the same tool. I'm assuming that max is reverse. There is also a 231C with similar stats, around 425 ft lbs. Not sure that is good enough. 590 would be but 450 or 425 is a lot less.

So I'm not sure now.

I bought a Porter Cable Impact driver (600ft/lb). It seemed like the best buy for the $$/torque ratio. My only complaint is the amount of power seems to be the same for 3 of the 4 settings. I didn't opt for the spiffy $8 vinyl cover, now it looks like I've been dragging it behind my truck for miles.

I have a IR Thunder Gun, got it from a Sears Ebay auction. Really nice gun and I haven't met a nut and bolt it couldn't handle yet.

Everything I have seen on the 231H lists it as a 450 ft-lb'er.

Have to 2nd the Thunder Gun. I actually bought a bigger compressor before I realized it was the gun not the Compressor. The thunder gun has almost scary power. I also picked mine up on Ebay, wish I had bought the combo with the ratchet now though.
