My boyfriend has an 3.0L '89 Aerostar. It gets a really bad vibration when hitting about 25 mph during acceleration. He took it today to our local Ford dealership to get a tune-up, and get the vibration checked out. He was told that the rear engine mount is broken, which is causing it to shake. However, they said the part is obsolete (but they are looking for it anyway and will call in a couple days about it). Any suggestions out there about what can be done if they can't find the part and fix it?
thats a new one on me. i think it means they (ford) no longer carry that part. you should try several local garages that do engine work and ask for an estimate on replacing motor mounts. i'm sure someone makes those motor mounts, even if they are not original equipment from ford. rick
I have two 89s and there is NO rear motor mount. There is one on the rightside of the engine and one on the left. There is a mount on the end of the Transmission and you should be able to get one of them from a Transmission shop.
Ok, he said it's where the transmission meets the drive shaft. The guy who wrote up the estimate wrote it down as the rear engine mount We're probably going to have it checked out at a different shop. Thanks.
It will be easy to check out yourself. Lay under the van and grab the driveshaft and push it up toward the bottem of the van. If the mount is bad, the back of the transmission will lift up. It could also just be bad U-Joints on the driveshaft. You can check those at the same time. Shake it and see if it flops back and forth. Should be pretty tight.
My boyfriend said something about them being able to push up on the transmission, thats when they said it was the mount. He asked them to check the u-joints as a possible source for the vibration, but the mount is the problem that they found when they took a look at it. Thanks for the info
