I have a 1994 250 HD 4X4 7.3 Diesel. It was dripping a drop or 2 a night in my newly paved driveway so I took it to the dealer for a look see. They told me my pan was a little poreous! Went to pick it up this morning and there was a quart of oil underneath it!!!!!! Obviously they used an awl and hammer to check the poreosity! Put it back on the hoist and sure enough there is a hole where there wasn't one. They are telling me 20 hours labour plus parts. Have to pull the engine right out of the beast to replace the pan! Help please!
cheers jvc
I suspect it was rusted, rather than porous. There was a TSB from Ford on that very issue. If you can get to the spot where the hole is, pick up a gas tank repair epoxy stick at NAPA or wherever, and use it. Be sure you mash it up real well. Make sure you clean the general area around the hole well with acetone, or another good solvent and rough up the area with some 80 grit paper. Spray it with some rust inhibiting paint, and you should be good to go. Total cost should be less than $20.00.
Of course, this won't stop it from rusting through elsewhere, but it will at least give you some time to get a realistic estimate to have the pan replaced. 20 hours sounds a bit high to me, but I've been wrong before.
ON EDIT: I see 20 hrs is high for that job. Notice it only pays 10.8 hrs. if its warranty work....
My oil pan started dripping a month after I bought my truck.
I fixed it with a gas tank repair kit and painted it as best I could. It still is holding and from the looks of it will hold for several years.
