I'm new to the board and could use some advice on a recurring problem. My '94 Ranger 3.0 dies unexpectedly every few weeks. This morning it was sluggish and shut down at a light. Last time was on the interstate. If you wait a couple of minutes it starts right up and is fine for a few more weeks. Changed the fuel filter 16,000 miles ago. Could this be related to the fuel pump? I'm sure it's only going to get worse. Appreciate any thoughts. :-staun
When it stops you should check for spark and turn the key off and back on and listen for the fuel pump running for a few seconds. I can't recall if the 94 3.0 has a distributor or if it has a DIS system. If it has a distriutor it will have a TFI module which causes many problem with the ignition system. You couls also pull the codes to see if the computer stored any error codes.
I recntly experienced similar problems with my 87 Ranger 2.9. Started to die occasionally, than became more frequent until it didn't start at all. Replaced fuel pumps, filter, TFI, relays, etc.
Ended up being the ignition switch ($9.99 at Autozone). Good luck troubleshooting this!
Be carfull what you disconect. Run a code check first. Sounds like you could have a fuseable link going up, bad connection or a short, I would look there first after I added a good gas cleaner and conditioner . My truck would sputter and die or sputter and jurk from a bad fuseable link. Could be a component going up. My first guess is a lose connection or Fuseable link. Could be bad gas or water in the line get a good cleaner and conditioner first. There are most likly resistors and diods, also in the circuits, but less likly to go bad.
Another thing to consider is the ignition sustem there have been porblems, wit ford ignition systems, check the web or online manual for recalls and defects.
First read the manual, if you don't have one visit a liberary that does and get the diagrams.( Don't mess with wires leading to the computer or ignition system without proper understanding of the wiring.) Start pulling connections apart and checking with ohm meter and wiggle the wires to check for poor connection.
Thanks. I've changed the fuel filter and am trying injector cleaner. It has gone from sudden shutdown (probably electrical if I'm hearing the advice correctly) to sluggishness before dying. So now I'm thinking maybe something in the fuel system. My community is one of those where Shell was testing their new gasoline additive which they have been forced to stop. Seems it causes fuel pump problems. I've stopped buying it but coincidently my problems started about the time I switched to Shell. Appreciate the advice and I'll look at that angle.
