Actually the best you can afford. No one particular brand will last the same as another. Michilin if ya got big bucks, I have some 40K tires I just put on mine, last set on my car I got about 53K out of them (40K tires)alignment, rotate every 6K and balance. Ones I have now are mastercraft 225 70-15's. I got rid of the 14 inch wheels.
But I have had luck with dunlops, firestones on F250, bridgestones and michelins on the wifes van.
I would say stay away from direct OEM (same type) tire as they are generally not real good tires, just adequate.
But we are on our 3 or 4th sets of the mastercrafts on several different vehicles and they do seem to hold up well and are not real expensive!
I have had very good service from Firestone tires. 138,000 miles from 2 sets on my '92 4x2 and my '97 had 44,000 miles and looked good when I got free replacement Goodyears through the recall. If you have a 4x4 make sure you follow Ford's recommendation on correct style of tire.
My 93 xlt came with 225/70r14 tires. I do a fair bit of offroad driving. After a recent offroad sidewall puncture, I replaced my original Firestones with LT(truck) rated BF Goodrich 27x8.50r14 all terrain tires. These are much better than the factory tires. The tread design is deeper and more aggressive for offroading. They are nearly the same size, 1/2 inch taller and 1/2 inch narrower. The sidewalls are much stronger- camper anyone? Best of all, with the strong sidewalls, these tires do not roll over(flex) during aggressive cornering. They will also resist punctures much better. They are just as quiet as the original tires were. MY lil pickup finally looks a bit like a truck should! Well worth the money.
