OK, '91 4x4 with a 4.0, I've ascertained that it has a 'M5OD-R1' which seems to be a common designation to Rangers, Explorers, Aerostars and fullsize trucks.
My M5OD-R1 is stuck in third gear. Had it coming, the thing's been whining and has 172,000 miles on it. Either way I've got third and nothing but.
What of these 'M5OD-R1' transmissions is interchangeable? Are they the same unit in an Aerostar as an Explorer? The fullsize? What vehicles can I look to as donors for a transmission replacement?
these transmissions are very common for blowing shift forks, the last one i had to work on had a millimeter left of metal that slips it in to gears. That transmission will be interchangable with the ranger m5od. aerostars came with autos and the full size truck have what it says "a fullsized tranny" the ranger and exploders came with the miniture m5od tranmission, no part are interchangable but the transmission is identical inside except for size.
I did some research at an explorer site and a transmission site, and found that there were a handful of fullsize F-series that got these transmissions as well as a series of them in automatic Aerostars. Just wondering how you can tell externally the difference between the R1 and R2, if you were laying in the mud under a parts truck eyeing it up.
http://www.drivetrain.com/ has a good table of which got what, but there's still overlaps, especially on the fullsize trucks.
