No low range

No low range
My 2001 ranger won't engage into 4x4 low range. I needed it pulling my boat out of a steep boat launch a few weeks ago. 4 high works fine. Also no dash light comes on when switched to 4lo. any ideas?

My guess is thats its the transfer case shift motor. Does 4 high actually work, like you saw front and rear tires spinning, or did the dash light just come on? Either way, the t-case motor is the only thing i can think of that would keep the 4low from working. I know its not much help, but maybe something to get you started.

If your truck is auto, shift to neutral, put it in 4 hi first, then switch to 4lo give it a second or two then shift down to first. Thats what works for my explorer. You can usually hear it engage.

i had a similar problem with my 5-spd, turns out i didnt have the clutch in when disengaged from 4-L . thought i was stuck in 4-L for about half an hour. and i was 25 miles from home. not funny then but funny now.
