I hope someone has the patience to help me. I tried starting my 92 Ranger yesterday (I have not driven it in about a month) and it turned over real slow, started, and then died about two seconds later. A burned electrical smell filled the cab. I let it sit for a while, tried again, and it would turn over slow, but not start. I then charged the battery for about three hours, tried again--nothing. I had the battery tested, and it was perfect.
I then decided it was the starter (just guessing) so I started to remove it. I got two bolts out, and the third one (on top, but visible) is frozen. I have a few ideas and new tools today to try to get it off. The manual says there is a fourth bolt??? I can't see it from under the truck. What am I missing? Does this even sound like a bad starter? There are no pictures in the manual (Haynes or Chilton--I don't recall) It is supposed to be pretty easy, but the other bolts would only come off after being tapped with a hammer. This one has no space to get anything on it besides a little box wrench (13 mm)
Try snugging up the bolts you could get out, that will take the pressure off the 3rd bolt. Try a socket with extension and a swivel. If that don't work, put a 24" snipe on the end of the wrench. As for the 4th bolt, put your truck up on jack stands and have a good look, feel around with your paws and try to locate it. Happy skinned, bleeding nuckles. PS. crazy glue works great for closing up that flap of skin that got sliced off when your wrench slipped.
