I am putting together a 351w (unknown orgin or year-rebuilt by jasper engines) with an AOD transmission which I got from a 93 T-bird with an unknown engine(from a junk yard). The engine came with a manual clutch and bell housing attached which I don't need. My questions are what flex plate or flywheel do I need and do I need the spacer which would go between the engine and trans. If this is not enough info to answer, what more infor do I need to gather? Thanks for any help.
You can find out which flexplate by asking at a parts store. Besure to get torque converter to flexplate bolts while you are buying.
If you are asking about the pilot bearing that fits in the end of the crank, you do not want that, pull it out. The end of the torque converter sort of slips in there.
Pam
You need the AOD specific flexplate, using a C6 flexplate can wreck the front pump in the tranny. Get the spacer too, I'm assuming you're talking about the thin sheet metal plate with the inspection hole at the bottom?
you both are correct, thanks. Pam the torq converter has 4 bolts which appear to be part of the converter,as in welded together. are these to be replaced?
to loudfords, I have a sheet metal plate which I remove from a 302 with an FMX trans, will this spacer work on my 351 with AOD? Thanks again for your help
I think he meant the torque converter nuts--the bolts are part of the torque converter. I had to get the nuts from a transmission shop, no autopart store caried them. Also, they have to be torqued quite high so be sure to use a six point socket or you'll round them over and have a heck of a time getting the suckers back off if you have to.
