Hey everyone, when I was bringin my truck down to school(which is more or less 200 miles of interstate) I tried my cruise control and it worked to a certain extent. It would kick in and you could feel it, but then you could feel it(the truck) lurch forward then slow, then lurch forward again and so on. So I didnt use the cruise cause I didnt want to hurt anything. Have any of you heard of this, can I fix it or am I just stuck w/it like that? Thanks!!!
I transplanted a cruise/tilt wheel column into Clyde from a donor '82 and initially it did that same thing. After some research I tightened up the cable that pulls the throttle linkage. It's still slightly "surgey" if I watch the vacuum gauge but it's smooth and solid when I'm towing the fifth wheel. Give it a try and see if it helps.
Make sure your speedometer is steady at all speeds. If it "bounces", it would kick on and off like you described. If it does "bounce", take the cable off the back of the speedometer and lube it up. If it still bounces, try to find a new speedometer cable. Good luck!
There is an internal variable potentiometer (resistor) inside the servo unit (ball shaped unit under hood with all the vacuum hoses and actuator cable) that causes this problem. I couldn't find a replacement potentiometer anywhere that would work--dealer parts guy thought I was crazy for even asking. I got lucky and bought a whole servo off a junk vehicle my neighbor had in his backyard. Maybe you can find one at a junkyard at a decent price that will still work. In addition to trucks there are several ford cars that appear to use those same servos but I don't know if they are identical internally.
