I'm still having hard starting problems. New glow plugs, relay and still when the temp drops below 45 I have trouble. Here is theory I'll run by everone here. After trying to start it a couple times I'll here the glow plug relay finally click and it will start. Could it be my oil temp sender or something related to cranking a cold engine and circulating cold oil? Where is this temp probe? Todd
I think there are three sensors that control your glow plugs. Engine oil temp, Intake air temp and Barometric Pressure. The intake air temp if open will default to 15 F I think. Look at your ammmeter when you turn your key to the on positon it should pull way down the after about two minutes return to the N on the normal. I do that cycle twice on a 50 F or below day if I didn't plug my truck in.
What I am seeing is the ammeter dropping just slightly below the 'N' and then after cranking a couple times and waiting for 20 seconds or so I see it pull way down and hear the gpr click. It will then start since the plugs have now been heated. Todd
That seems strange. Can you get the codes off your truck? That could tell you if a sensor is bad. Or not! It depends. Do you have a multimeter? I will take some measurements on my truck so you can compare if you can do the same.
I"M CURED!!!!! Stupid me, I've been fighting this for eight months! When I changed out my glow plugs I also changed my gprelay. Well guess what, the replacement was bad! I bench tested it and it sticks. About every third to fourth time I tested it it would work. Fortunately, I saved the old one because I'm an old scrounge. I stuck it in and cycled it. The ammeter pulled down instantly to where it should. I locked up and went inside for the night. My wife was skeptical about not plugging my truck in but I had faith!
10 hours and 18 degrees later she started right up! Thanks everyone for your support and ideas! Todd
