i have an 86 f-250 4x4 with manual trans & 460. It is just a farm truck, no real wheeling, some trailer towing. Anyway, reverse is going out of it. it is a 5 speed trans, which seems weak, especially for pulling. Is it worth rebuilding or where would be a good place to get a rebuilt one? What trans is it exactly. I know there was a Mazda trans in the lighter trucks, is this a version of that or something different? The older 4 speeds seem stronger and i really don't need the overdrive. IS there an easy/cheap swap for a 4 speed? Thanks for any help.

If it's a 5 speed, I'm thinking that it's a zf, with granny low and overdrive. It's actaully a pretty strong trans, but it might be kind of pricey to rebuild. Beware the mazda, but it won't even bolt up to your big block. You could swap a 4 spd in, but I'm thinking that you would have to change your driveshafty lengths.
