My 1994 ranger with tilt wheel needs the ignition keyswitch changed due to it being worn out . What is involved in replacing this and is this a dealer only item? Could I get the same key so it will work in the door locks like it does now?
To get the same key setup, you would have to go through the dealer or a locksmith.
To just change out the lock cylinder, is not a big deal. You can buy a lock cylinder (with 2 new keys) for under $20 at Autozone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys, etc.
I have never changed one on a Ranger, but I have replaced the lock cylinder from my old '89 Mustang myself, and it is not a difficult job. There are instructions in the new lock cylinder, but you basically have to remove the plastic housing around the steering column, and depress a pin that holds the lock cylinder in place, and it will slide out.
