Unhappy Oil loss speculation????

I had a heated discussion with my dad the other day regarding the loss of oil and how to tell if it is from the valves or the rings. Basically he feels that there is vaporization of the oil passing through the EGR into the intake when these older motors get loose and are run hard. I have a 71 360 and he has an 86 6.9 diesel , both of which when run hard tend to burn oil faster. My big Question is how can you tell if it is the valves or rings when a compression test only explains pressure loss. Obviously you could do a head and valve job first then re do the compression test to seperate out the top from the bottom. My 71 has 107,000 original and not much use after the first 10 years. I initially assumed from sitting so much it was the rings but now from other forums that the heads are the weak point of the motor. Inevitably my goal is to create an upgrade with the stock motor basically reliable for long milage good milage and strong haul. I hate a truck that eats oil this just says it's not right.

When you do a compression test, squirt some oil into the cylinders and see if the pressure goes up, if it does then the rings are losing compression. From what I understand interminnet smoke that goes on and off and changes when its hot or cold, is worn valve guides. A consisnent smoke all the time I think means that its rings. On older worn out engines 90% of the time they both leak. Chances are the smoke is coming from worn valves and rings. Again dont bet on what I said it is what I have heard over the years and I may very well be wrong.

Hope this helps

A good portion is probably the valve stem seals which like most others have LONG since disappeared.

I am running back and forth Valvoline 10-40 or 20-50 in hopes of seeing a difference. If the oil level gets down a quart or so at idle you can hear a tick tick tick which I thought might be a push rod. It is not as noticeable when the oil is full. What are you seeing in price to have the stock heards re worked. I'm not talking top shelf but strong replacement parts along with maybe porting and milling for slightly higher compression? If there is anyone in the Boise area knows of a reputable machine shop to do the head work and possibly the bottom end as well???
