what f-150
I need a work truck to tow my trailer and equipment approx 5000lbs including trailer. I do mostly city driving (contractor) Will 1997-2000 f-150 single cab 6 cyl be okay. Or should I go with an 8 cyl. I want a single cab (cheaper) Does the f-150 come in diesel?
thanks
Towing I would suggest looking for an F250 diesel - in the regular cab configuration and a basic truck they are not that expensive. Mileage will be better empty than the gas F150 and it will tow like there is nothing there with the 5000 lb trailer.
That said, if you are going gas I would look very hard at the 300" inline six. If you will be driving I would consider a manual transmission, if you will have employees driving then the auto may be the way to go. In late 80's configuraiton they had one less horsepower and two less foot lbs of torque than the 302 V-8 but did it at half the RPM which translates into much better towing characteristics. I had a 1983 F150 with the inline six and a 4 speed auto overdrive transmission. I do not know what gears it had. Power was low, although it would pull a pretty good load with the torque it had. Mileage ran around 14 for the three years I had it. I replaced it with the truck in my signature, 1995 F250 powerstroke, and have been very happy with this truck for going on four years.
