Oxygen O2 Sensor Replacement
First buy the sensor. The 4.0L takes a Bosch #15718. It cost me $49.98 plus tax at Discount Auto. The 3.0L may be different
Best time to do this is during an oil change when the oil filter is removed. It gives you more room to work. You'll see the sensor screwed into the exhaust pipe just below/behind the oil filter.
Remove the inside engine cover, and unclip the connector on the right, passenger side. You may have to remove the retaining clip to do this. I had to.
Pull down the wire from underneath. Use a 7/8" or 22mm box wrench fed over the connector wire, and lots of muscle to undo the sensor. Replace the sensor and feed the connector wire up to where the old one came from. You'll need to have an assistant inside to pull the connector up.
Other posts indicate these should be replaced every 60,000 miles. This is the first one I've replaced on our Aerostar and it now has 146K. Our Average MPG around town is 12.5. Let's see if this helps.

You saved me hours of aggravation trying to find that connector. And you were right, once I got the doghouse off it was right there on the passenger side. It is a tight fit, but once you disconect the connector from the mounting point, it is easy to disconect.
Now plugging it back in is another story.
You really do need a helper to get that cord up there and pluged back in.Again thanks for your post vintageant! You are always welcome here, even if you don't own an Aero anymore.
