Have a 300 and the other day it just made a little cracking or popping noise and died then would not start. It turns over fine but thats it. I have checked and it has no spark. I changed the cap, rotor, coil and ignition module and still no spark. I have put a test light on the coil leads and both stay hot, and will not pulse when turning the motor over. The only thing I have not changed is the condenser and the distributor. Any ideas would be appreciated because I can't think of where to go next. Before this it was running fine with no warning at all.
The light not pulsing when cranking is your largest clue.
crank engine and check to see if the rotor is turning.
a.) if turning then replace the hall effect sensor (after trouble shooting itand ensuring it is bad), or the Ignition module on the left fenderwell behind the hood hinge (it's encased in a heatsink).
b.) If NOT then pull out the distributor and check to see that the distributor shaft gear is only turning with the shaft (ie: the pin is intact.) If pin is not intact, get a new roll pin and replace. install the distributor in and time engine.
I checked that and the rotor is turning. I have already replaced the ignition module but I didn't think of the Hall Effect sensor. I will look at that next. Thanks for the advice.
im not getting a spark through the coil wire that goes to the cap so i dont think its the hall effect sensor
i was hoping it was somewhere else
If the sensor is not picking up the signal you will not get a spark through the coil wire to the rotor. That was the same as mine was doing. It's the same as when you have point and they do not break then you get no spark. Sounds to me you have the same problem.
Dont buy anything from autozone
my 13 $ coil that was the first thing i bought when the POS wouldnt start
Not to P*** you off any more but I don't see how the Autozone coil bought after the fact could be the whole problem. Something doesent add up. I'm not saying I don't believe it was bad out of the box. I do. I work in parts. It happens every day. One day I pulled 4 starters off the shelf before I found one that worked. A store getting a bad run of rebuilt or new parts is just a fact of life and its going to happen no matter what store your shopping at.
I believe Autozone coils are made by Wells and truth be known Wells ignition parts are used as OEM eqipment on at least one major auto manufacturer. Can't remember which.
I hope the coil was somehow the cause of all your problems. If that mechanic has it running I'd give it a good workout close to home and check things out. I just think the fact that there was a problem before the coil was replaced means that the whole problem could not be the coil.
If its as cold where you live as it is where I live I hate to think about anyone being stranded in it.

Good Luck & let us know how it goes...
yea it is cold i like your idea about driving it to make sure
it really really sucks the whole situation but i guess the ignition system was 15 years old so now its all new and it shouldnt be a problem again
Andy
i am having the same proble on my 84 that was changed to duraspark II the only thing we can figure is the ballast resistor is not doing its job is this a valid idea
