1990 Ranger A/C
My son`s 1990 4.0 Ranger A/C works great sometimes.If you start up cold,turn on a/c it blows very cold for as long as you drive.When you stop and shut off truck and let sit for a short time then restart while engine is still hot the compressor will not kick on.If engine cools down some it will work ok.Any help would be appreciated,thanks Jeff.

I would check the power to the A/C clutch when it is hot and not working. It should have 12v.. If you find 12v there, it is possible that the clutch needs to be adjusted. They sometimes get where they will engage cold, and then refuse to work when hot. Must be a union thing of some kind? If you can get it to engage while hot by gently tapping the center of the clutch with a broom handle, then you probably need to get it adjusted. There are shims buried in there somewhere, and you need a clutch puller/pusher to do the job. The gap should be about the thickness of a credit card when not engaged.
Another thing could be a hi-temp/overtemp cut out switch, if so equipped.
