Bill i had the fluid changed in the truck last night and seen a lot of metal peices in the bottom about the size of a half B_B
also took to it to two trans shop one beling AAmco and both said i had to rebuild the tran s What is you opion on these trucks ?? I got it for my sons 16th Bday and now i dont know if i got him a peice of junk .I dont know much about this truck .Do you know if they have agood lifetime or is it a cheap built truck ???
Most people have pretty good luck with the drivelines (well, the SOHC has the timing belt tensioner issue but that's another thread). What are the chances that he took it for a "good ride" and damaged it? Was there any burnt smell in the fluid?
My 94 Ranger has 178,200 miles on it, all by me. The most I've seen someone claim on an Explorer was around 325,000 miles. A buddy of mine put about 200,000 miles on a 92 Explorer (bought in 93) with no serious problems (just normal wear items). High 1XX,XXX miles is not at all uncommon with reasonable maintenance. With that in mind, as well as being the best selling SUV in the US, I would not say they are cheaply built.
BTW, I'd watch out for the Aamco price. They sure make a person pay dearly for their name and there are plenty of other competent transmission shops out there. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you Bill for your reply .When we checked the fluid it did had a burnt smell to it .But i dont know if this is something that has been there sence we bought it or if he did go out and sling the guts out of it .I had a feeling that AAmco may try to over charge me once they had the trans out so i feel now i will go to a smaller shop .What do you feel is a fair price to pay to have this Trans rebuilt >?? AAmco said 1195$ plus the charge for hard parts that may need replaceing and a local shop said 1500$ to 1700 ,What i am scared of with AAmco is the chage for hard parts .Thanks again for your responce
No idea on a fair price; labor rates vary in different areas around the country. I'd ask friends for suggestions on tranny shops. And yes, they generally have a basic rebuild cost but adders, like a damaged gear, increase the cost. If you're handy, consider pulling it yourself and taking it to a shop for the rebuild. This will save $. Just ask the shop if they will still warrenty their work. Also, if you're wiling to tolerate a wait, community colleges with auto tech training will often fix things for parts + materials costs; no labor.
