1986 351W will be carbaruated (2-barrell most likely with F-250 coming mostly with 4-barrel). 1981 was last year for 351M in F-150's. 1988 was first year of 351's being fuel injected. 1985 was first year for some 302 (5.0) and 1986 all 5.0 were EFI. For civility sake, I will not express my personal opinion of the 1980's 351W.

well if you think by saying something about the 80's 351's , you'll start something. just pm me your opionin, I'd like to before I go buy this truck thanks
The major difference between the 351m and the 351w is the over-all weight. I do believe they had slightly different power bands, and the 351w will bolt in in place of a 302 very nicely, where more parts are required for the larger 351m block. Either engine would be just fine, but you'll likely find the 351w residing under the hood.
Also the 351m have a flat spot on the head on the front (close to the rad) top corner on either head that the valve cover doesn't cover, and this is where you look to tell a 4v head from a 2v head on clevelands (2v heads have a 2 cast in this spot and 4V heads have a 4, and 351m/400's usually have nothing, just a flat spot)
payed 2500.00 for it, thats not bad around here, everything else I looked at was a bit newer but not as nice, I even tried a chev beleive it or not(what a peice of crap that was).the 86 is a 351w 2barrel, it has 70,000 miles, new tires, and a really nice canopy, the only rust was over the back fenderwells, he did a patch up job on fixing it, but it will do. the interior is mint, inside the box doesn't have a dent in it, actually the whole truck is mint except those back fenderwells. and I couldn't get over how smooth it ran. its smoother than my 94. would this truck have a C6 transmission? and I see he cut the belt on the air pump is that a problem?(it doesn't seem to effect the running of it) thanks for your input guys Randy
351 windsor similar to 302. Water flows through the intake thus the radiator hose neck where the thermostat is located is attached to the front on the intake. The 351M doesn't have water flowing through the intake and the thermostat housing is attached to the block. The 351 W is a small block and uses the small block bell housings. The 351M uses the big block bell housings.
I lied! its got a 4 barrel, the old guy was wrong, maybe he just never opened-er up. other than a couple ball joints she looks pretty sound, can someone tell me can I get theses balljoints out with the balljoint C clamp(removel tool) that I use on my 4x4
