Hello from Phoenix AZ. I had a plug blow-out of my 1999 F250 and had the head helicoiled. Does anyone have information on how to properly torque the head bolts and what pattern?
V10plugster, Welcome to FTE! A great place for valuable information.
My Haynes manual gives detailed sequence for the cylinder head, I hope that I can explainit well enough. First of all, new head bolts are to be installed, as these bolts are torqed to yield, meaning that the old ones are too stretched to be effective. The diagram shows 12 head bolts, 2 rows(top and bottom) of 6. I will list the torque sequence for the left cylinder bank, the right cylinder will be a mirror image.
#1 - bottom row, 4th from left
#2 - top row, 4th from left
#3 - bottom row, 3rd from left
#4 - top row, 3rd from left
#5 - bottom row, 5th from left
#6 - top row, 5th from left
#7 - bottom row, 2nd from left
#8 - top row, 2nd from left
#9 - bottom row, 6th from left
#10- top row, 6th from left
#11 - bottom row, 1st from left
#12 - top row, 1st from left
First time around the sequence torque all bolts to 30 ft./lbs.
Second time around, using a torque angle indicator, tighten bolts 90 degrees.
Third time around, tighten all bolts another 90 degrees.
