Well, I was working on my motor today getting ready to put the crank back in and hadnt had my second cup of coffee yet. So I was trying to take a rod bearing out to replace it and I couldnt get it too budge, so I got my hammer and a screwdriver and a rag and attempted to tap it out with the hammer. Well, it worked but I gouged the little indentation/slot at the end of the rod journal. The new bearing will not go in becasue its gouged. So I think Im screwed and am gonna have to get a replacement rod, what do you think? Is there anyway I can hammer it out or anything so I can put the bearing in?
Thanks so much this site is invaluable I wouldnt be rebuilding my engine now if it werent for FTE. Thanks you guys are the best
If it's not too big, just a little TINY type of thing on the edge where the rod meets the cap, you can usually whiddle any protruding metal off with a sharp knife. If you're real carefull you could try and file it.
If it was me, I'd find a new rod. Why risk it? A new rod should be ~$10 from DSC.
OBTW, you push the bearing side to side to remove it. It will kind of rock out. You dont spin it out, it's been beaten into the metal of the rod for many miles and it wont do that easily. Oh, and this is a big one, DONT GET METAL HAMMERS WITHIN 100 YARDS OF YOUR REBUILD!!!!! Get a rubber mallet or a plastic dead-blow hammer if you feel the need to hammer on something.
Sorry for the lecture, but I dont want to hear about how your rebuild blew up in a month!
What kind of rods? I have a few extra C7 428 and C3 427 rods if you need one. Just pay shipping and it's yours. Let me know what your running and if you can weigh the rod I'll weigh these and send the closest one. G.
