Computer Chips?

I have a 97 Expedition 4x4 5.4L 3.73 gears w/tow package. I want to be able to program it myself. What do you recommend? What gains have you seen with them?

I was told you can only expect about a 7 hp gain. The rep for the programmer told me that so I know it was reliable. I'm not sure if it's worth the money on a gas motor. Diesel with a turbo is a whole different scenario....

Maybe with a Jet chip but not with a truly good chip. Diablo and Superchips give 8%-12% gains over stock.

I would like to go with the Diablo but can the user program it for a 97? It looks like you can for the newer vehicles but I did not see anything on the 97. (or did I miss something?)

Yes, with a chip you can go back to 1988 with Diablo. With a tuner you can go back to 1999 with Diablo and 1996 with Superchips.

So it looks like the only one I can get is the superchip if I want to be able to change the settings my self. Diablo only goes back to 1998 unless you want to buy a chip with there program in it. Did I understand you right? Are there any other chips for that year or are those the only two?

Yes, you can use it, but it will not calibrate the speedometer for gear ratio/tire size changes prior to 1999. Everything else is supported.

I'm sorry I think I'm lost here.... The end user can program the Diablo chip? I have the same size tires and rims that came with it when I bought it new so thats not a option I'm looking for. More to the point of timing and what not.

You can have your chip custom burned that takes into consideration any other mods that you may have done.

You cannot make changes on the fly with the chip. Once you get the chip, you get one state of tune. (UNLESS, a flip chip is available for your application, then you can choose 3 different states of tuning.

You CANNOT get a Diablo TUNER for your year.

You CAN get a Superchips TUNER for your year.

What exactly do you want to program yourself??

Are you looking to be able to have various states of tune, be able adjust shift points for the tranny on the fly (so to speak), etc. etc.? (GET A TUNER)

Or are you looking for a one state of tune (made to YOUR specifications) chip? (CUSTOM CHIP)

OR...*whew* are you looking for an off-the-shelf chip that'll give you the most bang for your buck? (CHIP)

I would like something that I can change the timing and I don't mean flip a swith and go from one program mode to another. I would like to be able to change the air/fuel mixture. Bottom line I'm looking for something more advanced than a plug and play model. Flipping a switch is fine after I have everything set up. I think I'm asking for too much here. Maybe take control back over to the end user. Maybe everything runs at its best right now and nothing needs to be changed but if you don't try you will never know.

Sounds like you need a customer burned chip. It is not asking too much.
