power steering problem

Our E150 ClubWagon van, 1990 model, has become very heavy in the steering when turning the wheel to the right. It seems there is no power assist at all. But it's fine when turning the wheel left. The problem is reduced when the van is moving.

What causes this problem; pump or steering box?

Gus

The pump just makes pressure, right or left doesn't matter to it, so box is my guess.

sounds right

Yeah, I thought the same. The sloppy steering indicates it's due for a reconditioned steering box anyway. Seems strange that the heaviness is only in one direction but what do I know about steering box internals.

Have you ever replaced a steering box? It looks like a fairly straightforward job, given the correct tools

Thanks for your advice.
