so i went out to my 93 bronco tonight to go for a little drive, clear my mind, that sorta thing. being in colorado springs, it is kinda cold here at night so i wanted a little heat. get in, start her up, and throw it on the mix setting. next thing i know theres this nice loud squeal, rpms drop WAY low, and the power level drops way low too. i checked, it does this on mix, defrost, norm a/c and max a/c, but not on normal vent or floor options. anyone else had this prob, and if so, what in the hell is wrong? just got some things fixed a few weeks back. seems everytime i fix something on this thing something else goes wrong. i still love the damn things though. thanks!
hmmm, maybe bad AC compressor clutch, I know it shouldn't be that with the heater on, but I know when I turn mine on mix the A/C clutch kicks on. I would see if that may be the culprit, about the only thing I can see that would cause the squeal (belt) and RPM's to drop (tension on the belt). Just my thoughts.....
The compressor runs in ANY of the defrost positions including the "mix" position since the mix is floor and defroster vents. So most likely it is the compressor pulley or clutch.
lookin like the clutch itself. checked the belt and the pulley and it was fine, so that leads me to think its the clutch. ill drop it by a mechanic sometime next week and find out for sure.
My compressor clutch began seizing on me on night when I went to turn the defroster on ( as greystreak stated, it runs in any defrost position ).....so I simply unplugged the electrical connector to the compressor ( I dont use ac anyhow ) and then I was able to use the defrost without that loud squeal!
If you dont use the ac much, this is a cheap and easy fix until you feel like getting it repaired.
Im not with my truck right now.......lets see if memory serves me.
I believe the connector ( if standing in front, facing the engine ) was on the left side of the compressor, just a little left of center. Mine was about 1/4 inch wide by 1 inch long or so.....
Clutch is fairly easy to replace if i recall correctly as well. About 80 dollars and 1 hour of work. The only special tool needed is one for the retaining rings.
