I have a 1995 F-150 4X4 Standard Cab Short Bed I bough used a few years ago. When I bought it I realized It only had the one rear fuel tank. However what I didnt realize is that tank was only 18 gal. I wish I did a little research first. What makes it even harder is when I fill it up, the gas pump shuts off at approx. 15 gal. 16 if the truck is tilted away from the pump. I know its not a faulty guage reading because on several occasions I have filled up an gas can and topped it off that way, It seams it is the pressure of the fuel pumps and/or the vapor return system of the fuel pumps we have here in the St. Louis area causes a back splash and the pump shuts off to soon. I have been able to fill it up to the full 18 gal. in a few places outside St. Louis that dont require the environmentally friendly pumps. Someone once told me it was a clogged air relief line that runs along the fill pipe however I noticed this truck doesnt have one. I's this something other people have noticed?
Shortly after I discovered this issue I filled a gas can and kept driving till it died to see if the gauge was reading correctly. When the neddle hit "E" I counted about 10 miles before it cut out. I usually dont go anywhere where there isnt a gas station far away. So my usuall driving habbits dont fill till it hits "E".
As far as I know this may be normal for this truck. However all my past cars and/or trucks I was always able to fill to the full limit minus a gal. or less.
if you run your truck to E alot if it was me id be replacing fuel filters quite often.
i try and not run my truck under a 1/4 or 1/8 tank. to many drugs on the bottom.
just my $.02

I’ve heard it both ways. Some say you fill when it hits 1/4 tank and you wont suck up any debris settling in your tank. And others have said if you run it down and "YES" change your filter more often, you will keep your tank clean. The filter is easy to get too and doesn’t cost that much So I dont mind changing it regularly. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Round trip to the lake I go to often is 180 miles plus whatever I use when I’m there. If I bring down the boat (which sucks up some gas) and since I can only get 15 gal. in the tank at a time I barely get 160 miles. I’m at the gas station all the time. It doesn’t sound like a lot but those extra 3 gals. In an 18 gal. tank can make a difference.<o></o>
