I have a 74 crew 390 that has a divorced transfer case with a 4 speed.
My old truck a 78 super with a 400 (no M) attached transfer with a 4 speed.
Issue, bogging thru the bush last weekend on my first trip out with the rebuilt crew, in second gear the 78 seemed to rev higher that the 74 and was more in the "bogging in the bush pounding power band" area.
I put the same tires on the 74 that were on the 78, and the same 4.10 gears.
Question are the transfer cases/ trannys geared the same?
Has anyone divorced an attached before????
With a whole rebuild but the transfer and the tranny, the whole truck worked great thrashing thur the woods, without any issues. Well one, the squirt button fell off. GOOD EH? I will update some pic's too with the finished "Platium Rooster" unit to match my 2001 superduty.
what about the rearend diff's? that could make a pretty big difference depending on the gearing. i don't think the 205 tcase would be different from year to year unless you had a 208 in the 78. that could be whats making the difference right there. or a combination of the two.
He said the tires were the same size and both axles were geared to 4.10's. What he didn't say was what kind of t-cases they are. The 205s are the same gearing, whether divorced or married but if the 78 has a different kind of case it would make for a higher rev if in "Low". 205's only have around a 2:1 low ratio whereas many other cases are 3:1 and up.

Do you know what models the T-cases are?
I'd like to see a stock transfer case with a 3:1 low.
If its a NP208....it has a 2.6:1 ratio in the T-case. Compared to the 2:1 in the NP205. That is a significant difference in reduction and would enable your engine to stretch it legs a little better.
Well I guess 3:1 was a little extreme. 203's and 205's have pretty much the same low gear, 2:1. I know Ford used one of the Dana cases in these trucks too. I'm not 100% on the model but I believe it was the Dana 300. If the 78 has a Dana 300 then the low gear would be around 2.6:1, causing the engine to run at a much higher RPM.
