Question Fuel Pump replacement

Hello all,
I have recently come to own a 96 ranger with a 4 cylinder (not sure what size) and a five speed. According to the last owner, it needs a new fuel pump and thermostat. It starts and runs, but stumbles quite a bit and stalls often when trying to get moving. Does this sound like the fuel pump or the fuel pump regulator? Either way, what is the best way to get to the fuel pump? Is it in the gas tank?

I can't say for sure on your truck, but on my 88' it is a 2.3L 4banger, and there are 2 fuel pumps. One in the tank and one on the frame rail under the driver's side. The one in the tank is a low pressure pump and the frame mounted one is a high pressure.

You will really need a Haynes or Chilton's manual anyway, so you should pick one up. I would first try to replace the filter since it is cheap and easy and can cause the sympoms you mentioned. Next check the pressure at the fuel rail ~40psi (rent or buy a tester). Then replace the cap, rotor, wires, coil, plugs, PCV, and air filters since you have no idea if they have been replaced recently. Most of that stuff is cheap and easy to replace. This would be a good time to clean any and all of the air sensors too, MAF, IAC, etc.....

If none of that helps and you do have to replace the in-tank pump, do yourself a favor and get a few buddies and lift the bed off to get to the tank.

Welcome to FTE.......

Thanks guys.
I am planning on getting a manual, just haven't had a chance too yet. I figured the best way to the in tank pump was to lift the bed off. I will also try the fuel filter first, since it is fairly simple and cheap. I'll post again when I start working this weekend.

Thanks again

Did not know that. I thought I remember folks with newer Rangers saying they had 2 pumps too. Anyway good info, but Ford still didn't make it any easier to get to. Does the 96' have a vaccume FPR like my older truck? Older truck owners also check to see if there is fuel leaking into the FPR.

jnwean - If the filter doesn't help, then you should have an easy time testing for a bad pump by using the pressure test method. A pressure tester is like $30 at the parts store. If there is only 1 pump on your truck and you have low fuel pressure then you can assume it is bad. Also assuming you don't have any leaks or blockages.

Pull the bed off it's not to heavy if you have someone that can help you the pump will be right there. alot easer than droping thr plastic tank pain in the rear. Just my 2 cent.

I second the motion. Though pulling the bed may sound a little ridiculous to get at the fuel tank, it is the simplest way at it.
