Hello
I have an 1987 Bronco XLT. Recently it has been doing things that have me worried. Let me start about two weeks ago the starter went out (I guess) so I got that replaced, my truck was starting fine for about two days then all hell broke loose it would start but cut off if I do not have my foot on the gas it seems to be having trouble gearing up and to make matters worst it is reved up (when my foot is on the brake it want to go, it jerks) oh yea and it makes some noise. It idles funny so it it gets too low it will cut off it will stay on as long as it stays in the 1 area but below it it cuts off. I am afraid to take it to the mechanic because they are going to tell me anything they can to get more money out of me than necassary so I would like to go with some general knowledge of the possible issue. One more thing when the starter went bad In order for it to start I had the (spelled wrong) seliniod shocked and it started right up.
Please help me
Whens the last time it had a good tune-up? Sounds like it could be a couple of things. Dirty IAC and/or a TPS problem. Since it idles high, I'd be suspicious of a sticking IAC first off. IAC= Idle Air Control solenoid and valve. Its mounted to the driver's side of the throttle body. Could just need a good cleaning. With it idling and doing the things you are describing it has most likely generated some sort of codes. You can chekc these yourself with a paperclip or many of the major auto parts chains will do it for free. Id' start with the codes and then the IAC but I have a feeling you will get codes that tell you the same thing.
hello i also have a 87 ford bronco that i am rebuilding. it had similar problems to what you are describing and it sounds like it could possibly be the ICM igniton control module. mine would start up fine and then stall after getting to normal operating temperature. if i continued to drive and had no problems then turned it off it wouldnt start back up. you can smell fuel but the starter keeps turning over so it would seem like no spark. the ICM costs about $30 at auto parts store but can cost around $200 at a mechanic. do these simptons sound familiar. also before it started getting real bad. sometimes when coming to a stop sign it the tranny would sound like it was still running in a different gear.
hello i would definitely look into replacing the ICM. IT is located underneath the distributor cap with the distributor. easy to replace alot of older cars have similar problems. easy to do if you got tools and knowledge of automible repair kinda - matt
I got it fixed. It was the map sensor and the oxigen sensor. They said I needed to clean the valves I also got the fuel filter changed. The car has not cut off all day and it sounds better than when I bought it I still need to figure out why the regulatr lights wont work but the high beams do and how to fix the issues with my window they have gotten off line so I have a ways to go
