Water Pump Question

I posted this on the forum site for older trucks, but I did not get a response. So, I'll try here. I am rebuilding my 215 ci six that was stock on my 53 F-100. There are two holes in the water pump housing which (now that I have cleaned it) permit one to see the turning water pump shaft. What are these holes for? Inspection? They were so full of grunk that I never noticed that they went all the way to the shaft. Now I am a bit worried that all the stuff that I cleaned out was all that was keeping the pump from leaking. How can one determine whether or not a water pump is in good shape? Thanks, jvmcc

Its my understanding the small holes that you see are the weep holes, if the seals start to go out it will start to drip here, hopefully being noticed long before the bearings go out.

Thank you for your comments. I guess I'll stick the pump back on, and if it does leak at those holes, I'll replace it. jvmcc

Yeah, don't sweat it. New water pumps have these too. As 94 F150 said all they are is weep holes.
