1954 with 239...replaced oil pump gaskets to fix leak...o.k. Reset the idle speed when I read the gen. light is supposed to come on at idle on these older trucks..o.k., but occaisionally the oil light will fade on momentarilly and fade off or go out when the revs come up with throttle.
This is the type pump where the big sproket spins off center in the base of pump (not the two gears meshed together)
Is the oil light fading on due to the lower idle, Am I loosing the siphon on the pump due to packing it with petrolium jelly for first startup...which should have cleared by now, Or am I in need of a new pump soon...and if so, will a later style pump work if it has the "tang type shaft to engage the distributor gear???
thanks, Ed
try hooking up a mech.oil pressure gauge to see what your oil pressure is first.if it's good, and is not looseing pressure your ok.if you loose's pressure you know it's time for a new pump.hope you find your problem/scott.
Scott, Good Idea, I was going to build a center floor console for the stereo and I can incorporate my voltage gauge and a oil pressure gauge in the console.
thanks, Ed
hey ed,glad i could help.you could even use a tee,and hook up your oil lite and the gauge so you can see if when the lite come's on the oil pressure is low.good luck/scott.
