New 1994 4x4 F250HD IDI. Truely 75K miles. I have a slow leak from my front diff. Looks like the case was resealed recently as I can see new blue silicone. Its dripping off the protector pan. I retorqued the dif case and still leaks. Also I have oil dripping off the oil pan drain bolt. Anything major involved in new pan gasket other than 12 quarts of oil? If I didn't have a newly paved driveway I wouldn't give a. Parking on the street for now!
The blue silicone is not really the right thing to seal up the diff cover. I have used a product by permatex called the "Right Stuff" many times and have never had any problems, It seals very very well. I think by pan gasket you are talking about the drain bolt gasket, easy to do, just like changing oil only when you put the plug back in slide the old washer/gasket off and replace it with a new one. The oil pan gasket is what seals the oil pan to the block, i just dont want you to end up with the wrong part. Sounds like you found a great truck with really low miles. Enjoy.
Thanks I use permatex on my motorcycles. Good idea. They probably tried to mask the leak with the silicone. Tightened the drain plug bolt still leakin! I will change the gasket in 3 months. if not pan gasket.
dont overtighten that drain lug, i have seen them where they twist off the nut welded inside the an, then you will have to change the oil pan. the oil pan doesn't have a gasket, but the drain lug does. the pan will not come out unless you raise the motor up. it might do it if it were a 2-wheel drive, but not a 4x4
