Engine Swap Questions

I have been a member of this board for awhile but have not posted much until now. I have pretty much finished my Jeep and VW projects and now ready to give my 49 F1 the attention is deserves.

If my questions are redundant or if there is a simple search feature that will help me find previous threads on my subject please let me know.

My plan is to rebuild the Flathead V8 someday but for now I want to swap in a 302 with an automatic. In addition put discs on the stock front axle, add a dual master and put power steering on it. I assume these are typical projects.

I found a great deal on a 84 Lincoln Mark VII that has only 40k on a professional rebuild of 302 TBI FI engine and AOD both. The engine runs great. I am considering this engine and tranny because it is complete and has FI. I can also from what I understand easily convert it to a 600CFM carb which is interesting to me because I can wire it up more similar to how I would with the Flat head back in. I am also considering using the rear axle and getting the dshaft lengthend to work too.

My questions are what kind of PIA am I in for? Where can I get the motor and tranny mounts? I prefer to have the shifter come out of the floor and look kind of like the stock stick shift however what suggestions are there for swapping the steering column with a shifter? Some older Ford truck or what?

The engine obviously has AC and pwr steering. I believe the AC will work with my Vintage Air AC coil that came with my heater set up. (am I correct)

I understand many people use an older Toyota steering box to convert the F1's to power steering. What other suggestions are there? I prefer to use the stock pump that came with the engine and not sure if it will work with other brands of steering boxes including the Toyota box. (I prefer to stick with Ford or GM for the box)

Are there any write ups on doing a 302 engine and tranny swap in a F1? Preferably with the TBI 302 motors.

Sorry for the long list. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

The next project is the box. I want to build my own new metal subframe and put diamond plate on the floor.

Keith,

The one thing I can help you with is there is a tech article (look at the menu on the upper right part of the screen) About switching a 5.0 fuel injected mustang engine into an older Ford truck. The article is in regards to a new truck than yours and a little different engine, but the basics should be the same.

Most of the old truck parts places have motor mounts for this swap; I got a set and they were made by Trans-Dapt. I don't see an AOD crossmember listed, but they have some generic crossmembers, or maybe the C4/C6 xmember would work or could be adapted:

I've done a similar swap in my '51 M-3. I got an '84 Mustang 302 CFI and '90 AOD from a wrecker. I bought a tubular engine crossmember and made my own tranny crossmember. If you keep the CFI you will need the computer, wiring harness and an high pressure electric fuel pump. This is what I did to mine. I got rid of the CFI carb and bolted on a Motorcraft 2150 2 barrel. I converted it to a Ford Duraspark ignition. I got a AOD TV rod from a '84-85 Thunderbird 302 CFI. I took the AOD TV linkage of the Mustang CFI carb and modified it to fit the 2 barrel carb. Since I would have to change the timing cover to put a mechanical fuel pump on, I bought a 6 psi electric fuel pump. To solve the power steering problem. I took the serpentine tensioner pulley from the '90 crown vic I got the tranny from and bolted it to the original power steering mount. I've eliminated all the emision stuff. I took an old serpentine belt and cut it in half. I put it on and marked where it over lapped. I measured it and bought the closest size belt I could find. I'm going to get a lokar floor shifter. I will look like the stock tranny shifter and I've kept the clutch pedal. I've found out that the Mustang CFI were just the 302 HO with fuel injection.
