Wink First Post: Truck Troubles

This is my first post on this forum. First, a short history of my love for Ford trucks.

My first Ford truck was a 1984 F-150 with a 300 six, and 3-speed with overdrive on the floor. It was an old heating-cooling company truck. It was a stripped model with no options other than power steering and power brakes. When I bought it, it had spun a bearing due to no oil in the crankcase. I pulled, and rebuilt the motor. This was 110,000 miles ago. The truck is still able to go anywhere it wants to. I still own it, for now.

A few months ago, another F-150 dropped in my lap. This one is a 1983 with the 351 Windsor, C6 automatic, A/C, Cruise, AM/FM cassette. It is my 1984 truck on steroids.

I started doing work on the '83. So far, here's whats been done:

It had not had any maintenance in almost 5 years. After a set of spark plugs (autolite, of course) I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, wires, changed the oil and filter twice, changed the transmission fluid and filter, and drained the torque converter. Had the front alignment done, and replaced all 4 tires. THEN the heater core leaked. So, I ended up replacing the heater core, then the radiator, and all hoses, including a new thermostat and housing. THEN the carburetor, a Holley, started dumping raw gas everywhere. I found an original 7200 VV carb on eBay and ordered it. Got it, installed it, and it ran pretty good until today. Now, it does not want to idle, and there is black smoke out the new tail pipes. It's the carb, I know. I have a rebuild kit for it, but didn't do the job before I tried it out. Wanted to see what it would do...

Now, its able to hold water, and run at the same time. I installed headers and true dual exhausts with new cats all the way to the back. It sounds great. I am not going to drive it until I get this carb issue straightened out.

Does anybody know the Holley replacement carb numbers for the 7200VV? Anybody got one they'd like to see go to a good home in western NC? Rebuild kit for it?

The Holley that was on my engine was not right at all. Nothing fit properly. None of the numbers on the body of the Holley match any kit ID's that I could find.

This truck has become a money pit really fast. It needs to end!!

Thanks for any and all help.

IMO: I would forget the 7200VV and get an Edelbrock 1406 carb. It's a 600 CFM carb and they work great. I put one on my 86 F-250 with a 460 and it's like night and day. You can use one with your stock intake if it's a 4bbl. If not, an Edelbrock intake would be a great up-grade, and it would make your truck run better than new.

The 7200 VV is a 2 barrel Frankenstein mess. I've never seen anything quite like this on a vehicle before.

Now you know why they got rid of it in the first place.

The Carter on my '84 truck is wonderful. I've rebuilt it a total of 2 times. Continues to get nice mileage.

As for the VV, I believe that the computer has come back to life suddenly, and has adjusted the idle mix to RICH. This truck has headers with the cats and no O2 sensor. The computer was giving no codes or indications of life when I first checked it out. Since then, I have found several bad fuse links, and several blown fuses in the fuse block. One of the links, at the starter solenoid, was passing voltage, but as soon as the load increased, the pass voltage would drop to nearly zero. It had some battery corrosion on it.

I need to back off the idle mix now. I cant take the chance of having the cats get ruined.
