Any comments on the timing chain issue that cropped up when the SOHC 4.0L V6 was introduced in '01? Has it been resolved in the '02s? I have a 1995 3.0L with over 130K - never a single problem and runs like new, but will be looking at the '03s soon. I've been spoiled and am not sure about the new 4.0L engine.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Aug-02 AT 10:29 AM (EST)]Well... I plan to get a 2003 XLT 4X4 Super Cab soon and the 4.0L is the only engine available (and practical) for that configuration. I've never purchased an extended warranty before, but it seems as though I should at least consider it.
Believe me, if I keep this 2002 past 3/36, I'm getting the extended warranty as well...
One thing I haven't done yet is looked up people with 97 Explorers, to see how much real trouble they've had with the 4.0 yet....some have to be hitting/over 100k by now...
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Aug-02 AT 12:41 PM (EST)]Is this the ohV or the ohC engine? I have a 97 Explorer with the ohV/5-spd-auto with no problems that I am aware of. I am at about 98K miles, runs really strong, I think. not as quick as the ohC/manual, though.I have heard about the ohC having a timing chain rattle that Ford will do a little to help.
