We just got back from a 1600 mile trip a couple of weeks ago and averaged about 20-21 mpg with a combination of highway and interstate driving. We did not push it beyond 75 mph. The vehicle is a 94 with 4.0 and auto 4X4. I really don't know how it does around town. Our mail carrier drives a 1st gen exp.
Thanks, I'm a Bronco-owner myself, I have a friend who has a 97 explorer and she fills it up with less than half $ than I do with my in-line six Bronco!. I've heard that Explorers suffer from poor stability (road holding) and suspension, is that true? How is the A4LD tranny? I do like the Explorer's performance better, though...
No problems with stability here. This is by no means, a sedan so care should be taken when driving an SUV. I'm sure you know this since you're a Bronco owner. But for an SUV, this thing can handle very well. Ride is firm, but not choppy, there's a little bit of body lean on corners and steering is numb but confident and pretty precise since '95 and newer models use rack and pinion steering instead of circulating ball steering.
Heh...since I have an Acura 3.2TL now, my opinions may have changed a little bit but for an SUV, this is IMO, a pretty confident vehicle in terms of stability.
For the tranny, '91-'94 uses the A4LD trannies which can pose problems. Heh...even '95-'96 electronically controlled trannies have problems too. '97 is the first year Ford introduced the more power SOHC V6 coupled with a 5-speed tranny. This tranny is a lot more reliable than the '95-'96 version but the engine has problems with it's tensioner and I don't they have finally fixed the problem until the '99 or '00 model year SOHC engines.
My advise is this, get an Explorer with a V8. Both the engine and the tranny are bulletproof. Gas mileage should be similar to the V6. Shoot, I've seen some V8s on other message boards get about 25mpg on the highway. That's way better than my weak V6's 18mpg.
