Wits End

I have a 98 ranger with the 2.3 4-cycl eng. It is 2 wheel drive with 5 speed man tranny. I can not get the battery to charge. I have replaced the alternater and have had it tested after installing it on the truck. I have also replaced the battery and the starter relay. I have checked all the wiring and it appears to be in good order however with the truck running the gauge on the dash shows just above the low side and it drains the battery. With the truck not running the battery will stay charged. What else could it be?

Get a voltmeter even a cheap one and measure the battery voltage.

Is there a fusible link in the wire that goes from the starter relay to the alternator and if so check to see if it has gone bad.

Your battery runs dead when its running because it takes juice to keep the injectors and all the computerized stuff running. If your alternator isnt working your engine will run to the point when the battery is too dead to run the computer. I agree with the other guy, check for a fusible link.
