i think i gona attempt a rebuild on the trans in my star my self. any body do this befor? what will i need? any advice and pointers will be appriciated thanks.
Depending on your mechanical skills, transmission rebuilding is not the hardest task out there.
Start with a good book (not a Chilton or Haynes). Get the Ford service manual if you can.
If your trans is an A4LD, then replace the governor ($25-$30). Worth it....trust me.
When you put the center support in, stand the transmission upright so the seals don't hang down and get sliced.......trust me.
DO ONLY ONE VALVE IN THE VALVE BODY AT A TIME......trust me, really, trust me.
If you fill the transmission while the front end is jacked up, don't freak out when fluid pours out of the top. The fluid will escape out of the vent hole. Lower the vehicle and keep going.
I can give more tips, so please ask more questions when you start. I will be more than willing to help you out. Good luck and dive in!
thanks for the courage. i like to think my mechanical skills are pretty good. iam gona find me a book on the trans and read into it then i will atempt it hey theres a first time for everything. i will keep ya posted. thanks
Then I went down to NAPA and got a A4LD techtran manual.

These are the parts I bought for mine. I rebuilt 2 of them.
The only difference in the 2 - same year 89 was that one had a different size Servo Piston then the other.

As I remember the only special tool I needed was the Snap-Ring Pliers. I'm looking to see if I can find a junk A4LD that I can take apart and put back together. Then I can post them on the web site that M.Herrington was so kind to allow me to use.
