Front Diff Yoke

Post Front Diff Yoke

Howdy, well I just received my truck (93 F250 7.3 4x4 170,000miles) back from the shop after an oil change and I was told that my front diff yoke was leaking. I knew that I had a small leak so I told them to check it out. The leak looked like it was coming from the bolt heads on the front of the diff, but they said it was the yoke. They said the whole front end would have to come apart. I was quoted a price of $1,100.00 plus a front brake job included (as I am @ 10%) to fix the problem. They said they would have to remove the axles and everything else to do it. Is this right??? Can't I complete the same job by taking off the front drive line and removing the yoke and replacing the seals??? How hard of a job is this. No way am I gonna pay $800.00 in labor when I can do it myself. For the time being I will probably keep the fluid level up until I can have some time to work on it. But I am going to do the brakes soon. So what if I have to get in there twice saves me money in the long run. I am realizing I am going to have to spend some quality time and $$$ with my truck but I love it, I've had her for about 1/2 a year and has been a good running truck. "Hard to separate a man from his pick-up"!

id say if it isnt too bad of a leak just run it, I knew a guy who had a leak in the rear end because of a bad pinion bearing was wearing out the seal and something like that should be taken care of probably.

just kee the fluid level up. since you don't use the 4x4 on highway, it wont hurt it even if its really low. i wouldn't pay 1100 bucks for it. brakes are like 15 bucks and if you get under there and look at it, you can robablt take the driveshaft loose at the front and take that pinion nut off, and knock that yoke off and knock that seal out. then put it all back together. seal is like 10 bucks. take 2 hours if you take your time and have all tools/parts right there. 3 hours with brakes included. like he said, make sure the inion doesn't have a lot of slack up and down or in and out in it when the nut is still tight. dont tighten that nut up too tight either, make sure its snug and still turns freely"like it did before you took it apart.
